alt Soft pop music, shaky camera shots, low lighting and some uninspiring moans are just some of the dry and unoriginal ways sex scenes are now mainly portrayed in movies. These scenes can induce a number of emotions (whether it’s laughter or groans of disappointment) but they rarely evoke much interest. However, when a movie gets a sex scene right, it can be titillating but it can also be tender, awkward, kinky, passionate or all of those things at once. Here are a few movies worthy of reward for their awe inspiring performances and also that just make us want to go and try it for ourselves.

The now infamous sex scene (which was cut to secure the movie’s R-rating) is easily one of the most graphic sex scenes in movie history. But despite all the positions, thrusting and oral action it’s interesting to note that the puppets don’t really have any genitals.

9. The Hunger - Susan Sarandon & Catherine Deneuve alt

A cheesy vampire flick with a simple premise; Catherine is a vampire and after her current lover dies she seeks to replace him with Susan. The seduction starts out with very ominous music as Catherine encircles Susan. What follows is a hot slow-mo lesbian sex scene. For a flick made in 1983, it’s extremely graphic leaving little room for the imagination.

8. Intimacy - Kerry Fox & Mark Rylance alt

This movie allows the audience to view Kerry Fox at every angle as she twists and turns with her co-star in this hot love scene. Fox also became one of the most familiar actresses who dared to “lick the lollipop” on camera in a mainstream film.

7. Wild Things - Denise Richards, Neve Campbell and Matt Dillon

Before the lesbian scenes between Scarlett and Penelope in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, alt this movie was primarily sold on the prospect of some hot lesbian action between the two main female actresses. Not only do the viewers get to watch a steamy make-out session turned catfight in a pool between Neve and Denise but these girls also end up participating in a passionate threesome with Matt Dillon.

Conflict is what set this scene in motion as the Viggo and Maria start to shout, swear and slap each other. As they reach the stairs, violence turns into raw, angry and passionate sex as both actors try to rip off each other’s clothes. This movie also boasts the first American shot of the famous 69 position after Maria tantalizes Viggo by dressing up as a high school cheerleader.

5. 9 ½ Weeks - Kim Basinger & Mickey Rourke alt

Often imitated, but never duplicated. These sex scenes can get pretty imaginative; who can forget Basigner receiving cunnilingus in a shadowy alley in a rainstorm? Or the scene where Mickey blindfolds Kim and then proceeds to slowly seduce with an ice cube.

4. Unfaithful - Diane Lane & Olivier Martinez

The sex scenes in this flick keep getting hotter as it gets more likely that the main character will get caught in her cheating ways. The couple keep their secret romance alive by having sex just about everywhere; including alt a movie theatre. The hottest scene has to be when Lane’s love interest seduces her in an open bathroom stall while her friends wait for her inside the restaurant. She tries to resist but he forcefully pushes her upright against the wooden bathroom stall door. Blissfully wrong hot sex ensues.

3. Basic Instinct - Michael Douglas & Sharon Stone alt

This film could have qualified under several sub-categories: best beaver shot, best cunnilingus (deleted scenes), and most spirited woman-on-top scene. For many people, this film represented the first time they ever saw famous people doing something on screen which looked like real sex.

After the release of this steamy spy thriller medical experts started to speak out about the several minutes of sexual gymnastics – often violent and almost always erotic – as highly difficult positions that may cause unnecessary harm. Not only are these scenes highly graphic and awe inspiring but rumour has it the sex between these main actors are also completely real. alt Directed by Ang Lee (who also won an Oscar for Brokeback Mountain) this movie is not only sexual explicit but is intense, interesting and psychologically intricate all at the same time.
