Top Ten Most Influential Canadian Women on Twitter

WOMAN.ca's List of Top Tweet Queens to Follow Right Now

As Selected by Editorial Director Si Si Penaloza

alt Traditional news media is dead. News no longer breaks, it tweets. Twitterers tapped out tweets during the earthquake in China while the ground was still shaking. One of the first images of the airliner in the Hudson River, picked up by major newspapers, was “tweeted” by a 23-year-old with an iPhone. Twitter has become the top venue for “citizen journalism". The critical bliss of Twitter is that it happens in “real time”.  If you want to find out about something happening "right now", the place to go is Twitter. Not Google. This reversal is the first major global tech upset of the new century.

One thing I appreciate about Twitter is that one (or one's publicist or Twitter Ghostwriter) must be clever and quick to be followed. You can't be stunningly gorgeous but stupidly thick and be influential on Twitter. In this sense, this technology is a validating improvement over off-line life. This is one arena where smart girls rule, no contest. I was a little surprised not to find the usual "early adapter" suspects on Twitter. Where are Margaret Atwood and Naomi Klein? On that note, I'll be updating this list with new stats and additions, so stay tuned.

altBonnie Fuller / BonnieFuller Founder, Bonnie Fuller Media, Huff Po Blogger, Fr. Editor Us Weekly, Cosmo

I met "gossip smuthound" Elaine "Lainey" Lui in '07 at Hotel du Cap during Cannes. We were both waiting for Brad Pitt and George Clooney to show at the bar after their off-shore benefit for Darfur. It was love at first smut. That was the year she broke her elbow in the Mischa Barton episode. She loves to laugh at herself, which makes her all the more adorable. What started as a simple mailing to her friends and colleagues soon grew to a website with millions of subscribers from around the world. The site now receives an average of 500,000 unique visitors per week, making it a leading international celebrity gossip source, selected as one of Entertainment Weekly's 100 Websites to Bookmark.

Serena uses Twitter to engage and entice her fan base. While not as endearing and personal as Bif Naked's feed, Serena promotes herself with a pluck that is obviously not coming from a canned PR drone. Besides her impressive three-octave range, this is why I love Serena Ryder: in July 2008, Serena gave an exclusive performance for attendees of the 2008 Yeast Genetics and Molecular Biology Meeting at the University of Toronto. Is that randomly hot or what? In 2008, Serena won the Juno Award for New Artist of the Year. And the accolades just keep on coming...

My Favourite Tweets from Serena

Last night Serena Ryder won a Juno Award for Adult Alternative Album of the Year for "is it o.k"! woohoo CONGRATULATIONS!

Amazing suggestions Byrna and Z. I am just reading Catherine and Tara now... fabulous feeds!

I do wish I'd had these women on my radar back in March as I was preparing this feature. I've got them on the list for the next piece we publish on WOMAN.ca.

Thank you both for your great comments and for sharing your Twitter intel.

I feel like this is a 'most famous' list too, not really a 'most influential.' I'd add @charlottehrb, a SM strategist who uses her platform for lots of good causes, @ShannonPaul who writes a stellar blog and @ShannonBroudjema who is one of the most passionate, thought-provoking women on Twitter. Also, check out @LenKendall's list of the Top 30 Under 30 Tweeters. Some great Canadian girls on there too (myself included--shameless plug).

Interesting. I don't find this as much a list of 'most influential' as I do as perhaps "most famous?" There are lots of influential twitterers, who have far more followers than those above (which would then make them far more influential on twitter at least). Off the top of my head...

Catherine Connors (@herbadmother) - mother, pop culture blogger
Susan Murphy (@suzemuse) - writer, TV producer, media creator
Tara Hunt (@missrogue) - social media brainiac, business whiz, author

Awesome article! There's one other Canadian woman I discovered recently in the business arena, and love her to death for her sassy wit and no-nonsense tips and articles. Pluss she actually does answer questions, even with over 3,000 followers! (organic, too! No "gaming" the system!)

Her Twitter handle is @LisaPreston, and she runs several websites including http://tweetskins.com.

Cheers!

Nice list, got a couple of ones from TV. I can vouch they both are the real women. No fake accounts. :)

Loved that list. And was proud to be loosely included in your list with my many tweets with Amber MacArthur. Maybe Amber is onto something. Maybe you should follow me @yummymummyclub and I'll follow you!

Smart, wired women who engage and express themselves online: what's not to like?

BTW, I listened to Serena on both inbound and outbound legs of my TTC ride this morning, to compensate for being snarky about her lousy Twitt-iquette (which is still crummy, IMHO).

Argh! I searched for Karen Walton and Twitter did NOT give me her Twitter handle.

She is a bonafide social genius and a woman I track editorially.

Thank you for getting her handle to me.

You rock. Now we know exactly who likes smart women. Michael O'Connor Clark is a GPS for finding smart chicks. Your radar is razor sharp too. I've checked out these women and will be doing a follow up list based on what your keen eye has brought forward.

My goal was to mix it up a bit, not list the usual suspects. I even tried to find for a great Canadian porn star that used Twitter as an avenue to comment on the industry. I searched far and wide for CBC talent, as I once worked at the nation's broadcaster. Nora Young is a great suggestion.

Many thanks for taking the time to nominate for the next round!

Warmest,

OK, so I'll try this again with the bigger comment field :-)

It's a really interesting list, Si Si. Hard to know what your criteria are here, and I figure it's mainly your own personal preferences - which is totally fine, of course.

I'd happily agree with many of your picks (esp. Amber, Bonnie, Rachel, Maggie & LaineyGossip - all excellent), but I'll confess I'm puzzled by some of the others. Serena Ryder, for example - as I tweeted yesterday: terrific talent, fantastic songs, and her voice makes my toes curl, but her use of Twitter is driving me nuts. I don't believe for a second it's Serena tweeting herself (at least, I hope it's not). It comes across like some label publicist, tweeting 3rd person on her behalf. Ack.

So are we looking for women who are influential within the context of Twitter, influential (in part) BECAUSE of their use of Twitter and other social media, or influential independently and they also just happen to be on Twitter?

As for some other nominations, here are a few I'd recommend checking out:

The fabulous Kate Trgovac @mynameiskate
CBC's Spark host, Nora Young @nora3000
Community-builders Erin Bury @erin_bury or Melanie Baker @melle
B5Media's Rachel Segal @rachelsegal
The inspiring April Dunford @aprildunford
Chief cheap eater Alexa Clark @alexaclark
Strategy queen Jen Evans @nejsnave
Donna (podcast princess) Papacosta @donnaPapacosta
The pneumatic and amazing Idee-smith Leila Boujnane @leilaboujnane
Spiky, complex and challenging Tamera Kramer @tamera
Flickr co-founder and now head of Hunch Caterina Fake @Caterina
And, if we're measuring influence by # of followers, the list would be incomplete without Tara ("Miss Rogue") Hunt: @missrogue

OK, I guess that's more than "a few". :-)

try as i might, i just cannot get on-board with this whole twitter mania. how can we endorse something that limits lainey's glorious smut-seeking snarkiness to 140 characters?!

Bah. Been trying to post some thoughts and a follow up list here, but keep getting told my comment is too long. Why does the comment box expand if there's a character limit. Have a word with your site coders, will ya?
