Or, How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love the Downward Dog

yogaBelinda Kim makes a promise to her students at every class. "If you commit yourself to this practice, you will get there," she says. "If you keep practicing yoga, one day you'll find your own variation on perfection." Everyone has had moments in life when everything became bright, clear and alive - everything was perfect. There was a glimpse of pure awareness, when past and future no longer existed and total attention was focused on the moment.

Belinda has made it her mission to reach out to those who want to change their life through the pursuit of Power Zen Yoga. And I, like so many of her students, was searching for change. I started taking her classes in February of 2008. I found that it was the only work out where I wasn't constantly monitoring myself in the mirror. My physical and emotional aches vanished. All wants, needs, and desires disappeared for that hour. In Belinda's class, you aren't just experiencing a great workout - you are the experience.

Power Zen Yoga is a hybrid form of yoga that focuses on strength and flexibility in order to build fitness. I can easily say that Belinda Kim is the best yoga master I've ever had. Her instruction is clear and consistent; she is incredibly kind, positive, and exceedingly generous in spirit. Beginning with deep-stretching yoga designed to stretch muscles and make them more flexible, Belinda instills her class with a newfound sense of fluidity, mobility, and power.

belinda_kimBelinda Kim is simply a ROCKSTAR of a yoga teacher. Her teaching incorporates a great sense of timing and rhythm, and her quirky humor helps you through the tough spots.

Yes, I've caught everyone in my class staring at Belinda from time to time. She just has the most crazy, rockin' body you've ever seen. It's like we're all, "Yes, we're trying to learn yoga from this incredibly hot babe. Then maybe have a spring roll after." There's no mistaking it, Belinda has the perfect body. But she never gives off that irritating vibe of a yogi who you know rushes home at dusk to strip in front of a mirror and observe their physical perfection in the golden light of sunset. This girl is so chill, so relaxed, so easy going.

For Belinda, the physical acrobatics are just a fancy way to get the mind to calm down and give the body permission to do nothing but breathe. Her sunny, authentic demeanor seems to melt the stress from her students when she greets them warmly. That's not to say this popular instructor at Extreme Fitness is all talk. Her graceful demonstrations of difficult postures could lead even the most enlightened to feel jealous. Her flowing sequences signal the sensibility of an instructor who understands the intricacies of human anatomy. One other notable thing about Belinda is that she's very accommodating to any student with physical challenges, which renews everyone's enthusiasm and passion class after class.

extreme_fitnessKim isn't clinical or pretentious. She's able to read the room and tailor each class to the students' energy levels — whether a challenging pace or something a bit more indulgent. Whereas many instructors teach their classes in the hushed cadence of a poet in a library, Belinda sounds like a friend, chatting brightly over a cup of green tea. What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon?
