Looks Like Teen Spirit
When it comes to LABEL’s debut runway collection, Kurt Cobain is given a run for his money.
Though he’s been crowned king of the 1990’s grunge movement, even he would be impressed by the up-and-coming line.
The
girls of LABEL looked very ‘I-don’t-even-care-kinda-cool’ as they
walked across the studio showroom to Liz Phair’s Supernova. Designer
Shawna Robinson said it herself - the line was “inspired by the
volatile romance between Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain, the 90’s grunge
movement, piled on laundry day layers, menswear and lingerie.”
Fittingly, Robinson and partner Natalie Sydoruk called their
Fall/Winter 2011 collection “The Morning After”.
The
show started with a black and white video of a girl waking up, piling
on the clothes she clearly left on the floor the night before, and
lighting a cigarette before taking off and (presumably) heading home.
The walk of shame is made much less shameful in comfortable, cool,
easy pieces that work day and night depending on how they’re styled and
accessorized.
Speaking
of accessories, The Leather Atelier made their debut at LABEL’s show by
providing all of the jewelry and collaborating on two handbags. The
hand cut, woven and braided leather pieces have unique accents of
silver or brass. My favourite is a black braided leather necklace with
dangling silver fringe. While rock and roll enough to fit LABEL’s
collection, The Leather Atelier’s pieces have a bit of boho to them as
well. A perfect combination of two effortless styles. And perfect for
simple, easy pieces of clothing that need a little extra something to
finish them off.
My
favourite LABEL pieces were the black slouchy velvet pants, the white
Henley inspired maxi dress and the navy long-sleeved mini dress with
black leather patches on the elbows. That being said, I actually want
one of everything. The entire collection would make for the perfect
wardrobe. A bunch of light chiffon or silk utility shirts to choose
from, some cotton maxi skirts, the necessary band T, leather pants, an
amazing olive sweater dress with leather piping and the easiest coat of
all – an oversized cape. It would all go great with my Doc Martins. Ah
well. What do they say? A girl can dream.
