Too Much Estrogen in the Office?
Whether it be office environments, retail stores or the hospitality industry, woman are often working in environments a strictly all-female staff. Spending eight to ten hours a day working with women only can be challenging.
First off, there's the notion that women who spend lots of time together can synchronize their cycles, what this means for an all female team is that for around two weeks those ladies have to endure PMS, mood swings, cramping, and cravings in close proximity. The horror!
Next, because women can tend to be both territorial about their jobs and compassionate about other women's needs, this can pose conflict of interest for dealing with female coworkers. For example let's say someone who you work with is having relationship troubles, you know her private life is falling apart, at the same time her focus is way off - she's missing deadlines and you're having to pick up the slack. How do we get her to quit whining and get back to her job? For that matter, how can we deal with office gossip? Or that mother who is constantly raving about her kids at lunch when all you want to talk about is whether or not TomKat’s working on number two?
Here are some tips for coping with an all female working environment:
When all of the staff are PMS-ing, you can be the saviour in such situations by bringing in the chocolate and cramp killers and offering them up when the timing is right. Who can hate on a girl who's that considerate?
When it comes to the woman who’s all about sobbing over Mr. Wrong and can’t seem to get anything done, suggest to her that best thing to do might be to throw herself into her work until it blows over. Offer to help her set goals throughout the day and tell her you’re willing to trash talk the jerk at lunch, but not until then.
As for office gossip, the key is to stay diplomatic. When one employee is complaining about another, be sure to listen, nod you head and even try to suggest seeing things from the perspective of the opponent employee. This will prove your loyal to both sides but, never indulge in bashing another employee, even if you do agree with what they're saying; doing so could get you into hot water.
