For Your Health, And A Healthy Planet

I sit here surrounded by a plastic phone, my Tupperware container with the smelly remnants of my yogurt breakfast, and, I'm fairly certain, my desk is made of particled plastic. Plastic is choking our planet. My latest move away of plastic to date is my new dependence on my SIGG water bottle.
Ever heard someone say, "You know, you shouldn't use those plastic water bottles more than once?" Those regular old plastic water bottles are made of polycarbonate, a plastic that is made up of, but not limited to, bisphenal-A. Basically, bisphenal-A can (and does) leach into the liquid contained in said water bottle. You might be thinking, how bad can a little bisphenal-A be for me? Well, ladies, it mimics estrogen and has been shown to cause defective cell division. And then of course other studies have linked this wonderful chemical to other kinds of reproductive and developmental damage, as well as breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men.
There are so many other reasons to stay away from plastics but I'm just focusing on a very small, human facet of it. There are alternatives out there such as SIGG stainless steel water bottles (also made by other companies) and the new EcoUsable metal bottles which filter your water right in the neck of the bottle (though the price tag is high) to name justĀ couple. There are many other options out there, do your research, sometimes a bottle might be reusable, but, where are the materials coming from? Are they recycled? It can be hard to live green and eco-friendly, just make sure you're fully informed.
While I've yet to move away from Tupperware lunch containers, I think one step in the right direction is better than none. Be aware of packaging while you shop and think twice before buying a bottle of water when you're out and thirsty. You can save hundreds of dollars a year by switching to a reusable bottle. And I won't spit any numbers at you, but let me say the impact plastics in general have on landfills and how much they contribute to greenhouse gases, is astounding. So let's try to lessen our impact on this ball of green and blue we call home.
