New Photography Show Raises Questions and Eyebrows

Freud pondered it, Mel made a movie about it, and now Toronto’s own Dessinee Gallery is taking a swing.

Curated in response to a controversial article by New York Times columnist Daniel Bergner that explored women’s intellectual and psychological responses to visual stimuli, What Women Want is a confronting new photography exhibition that explores the divide between women’s emotional and physical desires.

Described by curator Alana Armstrong as “a wildly provocative visual ode to the split female psyche” What Women Want uses photography to address how women view and are viewed in the world, questioning everything from female representation to the role images play in female fantasy.

Featuring the work of Noah Kalina (NYC), whose pictures of fleeting youth have appeared in Esquire and Rolling Stone, Yuri Dojc (Toronto), the acclaimed nude portraitist and a host of international and local talent, What Women Want is shaping up as one of most influential shows this year.

So what do women want? I suspect, among other things, smart, socially-aware and challenging exhibitions like this one.
